A play about the madness of love, war and opera. Set in a mental asylum. In 1972.
The King’s Head theatre from Sun 19th June to 13th July.
Louis Nowra's Australian 1992 classic COSÌ directed by Artistic Director, Adam Spreadbury-Maher.
COSÌ has become one of the most successful Australian plays produced in recent history. In the confines of a mental institution in 1972, a young director undertakes to mount a production of Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte in its burnt out theatre while protests against the Vietnam War rage outside. Louis Nowra’s semiautobiographical play explores human relationships in a Melbourne mental institution, ostracised by a society in turmoil. Nowra asks our audience the poignant question, who is really mad... the inmates or the society outside.
“Real madness and angst only occurred when I worked with professional actors.” - Louis Nowra

This is a new play that brings together traditional elements of Commedia dell’Arte, great proponents such as Carlo Goldoni and introduces newer influences, ranging from silent films of Charlie Chaplin in the early 20th century, pantomime and political satire to the late, great Sir Norman Wisdom.
